As it turns out, Ghost Whisperer is indeed going ahead with its plan to jump five years into the future a la Desperate Housewives. Camryn Manheim, who plays Delia Banks on the CBS series, says the upcoming season as “scary.”
“There’s another underlining darkness to it,” says Manheim, adding that Melinda’s (Jennifer Love-Hewitt) baby will indeed have some powers, but the Ghost Whisperer showrunners are still figuring out what he can and cannot do. “Where Melinda has embraced her powers fully for herself, she hasn’t embraced it in this situation and it’s very complex and complicated.”
What does the five-year jump mean for Delia? For starters, her teenage son Ned (Christoph Sanders) will be in college, while her character is dating and back to real estate. “It’s nice baecuase we get to reinvent it again.
As for Hewitt, she said it’s “definitely fun” to play new mother because as a mom, she can be a little bit feisty.
After the jump, her baby will be at least four years old, old enough to do things other than cry and ask for milk. It was also previously revealed that the child “holds so much promise” – perhaps even more than his mom. In fact, an impending battle between good and evil might be resolved by the baby as “the key.”
The Ghost Whisperer won’t look the same next season.
At Comic-Con last week, cast and crew members confirmed that the show would jump ahead five years when the drama returns on September 25.
“We really felt it would allow us to tell better stories,” said Hewitt. “We thought it would be really crazy for Melinda to be running to a bridge at 3 in the morning with a baby strapped to her chest.”
What else should viewers expect to see when Jennifer Love and company return to the air?

- We’ll meet Eli’s parents.
- Jim and Melinda’s son will be named Aidan. Look for him to be even more powerful than his mother.
Sounds also confirm that Hewitt herself will direct the show’s 100th episode. That should be interesting.
Ghost Whisperer co-stars and real-life lovebirds Jennifer Love Hewitt (Melinda) and Jamie Kennedy (Eli) didn’t let go of each other’s hands as they roamed the halls of Comic-Con in San Diego over the weekend. I managed to get a few minutes with them, as well as their co-stars, Camryn Manheim (Delia) and Christoph Sanders (Ned) and producers Ian Sander and P.K. Simonds to spill secrets about their new season, premiering Sept. 25.
Love, Jaime, you two are obviously inseparable. Does that mean we’ll see more Melinda/Eli scenes this season?
Love Hewitt: Hopefully, yeah. I think they’re going to come up with fun stuff for us to do. We got to do a fun scene the other day that was funny and heartfelt. Eli and Melinda are sort of partners in crime and they share their weird gifts.
Camryn, Ned, how does the show’s five-year jump effect your characters?
Manheim: My son is dating girls and sucking face and I’m not super happy about that.
Sanders: I’m in college studying the paranormal. Eli is teaching one of my classes. It’s great to finally play my own age. Ned was 16, and now he’s 21 like me.
Manheim: Delia has rented the store next to Same As It Never Was, and has started her real estate business. She’s also dating several men.
Jamie, we’re going to meet some of Eli’s family this season?
Kennedy: Yeah. My dad, Ray, is being played by Barry Newman.
Love Hewitt: We have Barry Bostwick in the same episode playing his dad’s friend and business partner, Don. And we have the amazing Christine Estabrook (Desperate Housewives’ Martha Huber) playing Eli’s mother, Evelyn.
What is Eli’s relationship like with his parents?
Love Hewitt: Not normal.
Kennedy: My dad and I have a strange relationship. My mother and I have a good relationship. The episode I’m filming now is crazy. The bomb’s keep getting dropped. It’s something that’s either going to work or people are going to think this is really weird. It’s something that’s not addressed normally in television.
Love Hewitt: Not everyone on the show has to necessarily be alive.
Simonds: We realized because of Eli’s comic relationship with the dead, it might be fun to bring characters on who might give us eyeballs on the other side. This season there’s going to be some storytelling that involves things that ghosts can see that we can’t.
What powers does Melinda’s 5-year-old son, Aidan, possess?
Sander: He’s a special child. He has the gifts that he has and much more. He can see things she can’t, and sense things she can’t. What that lets us do is reveal a new dimension we haven’t seen before. There are beings on this other plane who are wonderful, magical forces of good. And some are the direct opposite. There’s a new enemy that we’ve never grappled with before. Also, sometimes there are things that don’t want to be seen. Shadows perhaps.

He admits that he’s really no thug, but actually a brilliantly gifted student with an amazing I.Q. who is just pretending to be a tough guy so he can fit in at his new school. Melinda investigates a cursed chain email that goes viral, putting all who don’t immediately forward it in grave peril…
[GWEN] A “charmingly awkward” girl, this young college student, 18-20 years old, was recently killed while trying to get help for her mother, who was terribly injured in a traffic accident. Convinced that her mother now lies in a coma because she failed to send on a threatening chain email, Gwen makes it a point of spreading the email, terrorizing those who don’t comply with it in a benighted effort to “save” them from her mother’s fate. Ultimately, Melinda makes Gwen see that she was in no way responsible for her mother’s condition, but Gwen may be holding back crucial information that will help Melinda get to the bottom of the spreading “curse”…GUEST STAR
[BRIANNA] This cute, athletic 18-20 year old college coed is having a make-out session with Ned when they are rudely interrupted by a horrifying discovery. She and Gwen were best friends, although they had quarreled bitterly shortly before Gwen’s death. [PAULA] Gwen’s mother, in her early 40′s, this frail woman lies in a coma, fighting for her life after a traffic accident. Gwen blames herself for her mother’s condition, but she’s unaware that Paula was suffering from a malignant brain tumor, a condition she kept from Gwen to protect her. Reunited with her daughter in death, Paula is able to lovingly reassure Gwen, and the two go into the light together…GUEST STAR
[STAN] This rugged construction worker in his mid to late 30s was driving the other car when Paula ran a red light, with devastating consequences. Even though he’s absolutely innocent of any wrongdoing, he hasn’t slept much since that night.
